SK Hynix Develops the World’s Highest Density 16GB NVDIMM

On October 21, 2014, the South Korean technology company, SK Hynix, announced their new development of the world’s highest density 16GB NVDIMM (Non Volatile DIMM). The state of the art NVDIMM is based on a 4GB DDR4 and will utilize 20nm class technology.


One of the main features of the NVDIMM is the ability to save and restore data to the computer server if a system crash or if power loss were to occur.


The technology behind this feature is the DVDIMM’s ability to send DRAM data to NAND Flash which has twice the density than the DRAM, if power loss is to occur, the DRAM, NAND Flash, and module controller would be combined into a single module. Subsequently, performance with DDR4 modules will remain constant while data is safely saved and restored.


The new NVDIMM will work at 2133 Mbps, have a 64-bit I/O and can process up to 17B of data per second at 1.7V. Mass production of this unit is expected to begin in early 2015, SK Hynix projects their product to be an industry standard in 2016.
