ST Microelectronics is a multinational French-Italian company that is headquartered in Switzerland. They were founded in 1987 when the companies SGS Microelectronics and Thomson Semiconductors, a French and Italian company, respectively. It was originally named SGS-Thomson but changed its name to ST Microelectronics in 1998. The two original companies were both highly established semiconductor companies, and ST Microelectronics is now Europe’s largest semiconductor chip maker. They are an industry leader in semiconductors, inkjet print heads, MEMS, MPEG decoders, smart card chips, computer peripherals, and automotive integrated circuits. The company has US headquarters in Texas as well as headquarters for the Asia-Pacific, Japan/Korea, and China regions. It is listed as public company on the New York Stock Exchange at 72.4% of its shares. Its product segments include sense and power, automotive products, and embedded processing solutions.
