Brief About Atmel Corporation: Atmel Corporation was founded in 1984 and is an American manufacturer of semiconductors headquartered in San Jose, California, USA. They have locations throughout the world, with places in: Norway, USA, India, China, Taiwan, France, Germany, UK, along with additional, smaller sites.

Atmel Corporation focuses primarily on embedded system-level solutions built around flash microcontrollers. They began as a fabless company, designing EPROMs and PLDs which were manufactured by another company, Sanyo.

Atmel is currently a fab-lite company, making much of its product line at vendor fabs. They serve a multitude of applications, ranging from consumer, computer networking, industrial, medical, communications, automotive, aerospace, to military. They are known for their embedded systems, but lead the industry in microcontrollers and touch systems.

In 2008, Atmel acquired QRG (Quantum Research Group), a UK based company, in order to get their foot into the touch screen and touch button market. QRG’s main focus was on using standard microcontrollers pre-programmed as touch sensors. Included in acquiring QRG, Atmel also gained QRG’s current and pending patents as well as a customer list related to touch sensing.

Atmel’s products include radio frequency devices (Wi-Fi, EEPROM, & flash memory devices), microcontrollers (8-bit AVR, 32-bit AVR, automotive grade, 8051 derivatives, ARM-based), symmetric and asymmetric security chips, touch sensors and controllers, and various other application-specific products.

Atmel Corporation well known supplier of its devices as standard products, ASSPs, or ASICs depending on the requirements of their end users. Atmel designs mainly microcontrollers, as well as flash memory. Atmel’s microcontrollers also support integration of touch technology to implement buttons, wheels, and sliders.
