As American Airlines campus switches approached their end of life, the demands being placed on the network continued to increase. To cope with the demand, American Airlines looked to restore all 550 global locations by reaching out to an industry leader for switch replacement.
The company selected was Hewlett-Packard—specifically, HP Networking and HP Enterprise Services. American Airlines’ choice of Hewlett-Packard was due to the company’s global influence along with their portfolio of reliable products.
Other deciding factors included HP’s open standards and network interoperability with American Airlines existing multiple vendor setup. The open standards that permit network interoperability and avoid any vendor lock-in to a proprietary network are designed to work in multiple vendor infrastructure situations. Additionally, the open standards provided American Airlines with a greater flexibility of different options to meet specific business requirements.
With the goal of a 24/7 LAN migration of a significant network, HP Networking replaced 3500 campus switches on all of American Airline’s worldwide campuses. American Airlines achieved an immediate benefit as user experience performance was improved. Another benefit of the switch update was a seamless experience of American Airlines business merger.
Throughout the duration of HP’s project, American Airlines completed its merger with US Airways. HP’s newly established platform of network interoperability allowed the staff of both American Airlines and US Airways to experience a smooth transition.Furthermore, the project permitted two companies with different systems to merge and network equipment to run flawlessly without the necessity of breaking and changing equipment.
Since the replacement of American Airlines switches, the company looks to continue business with HP. Currently, American Airlines and HP Networking have a project in the works on network enabled applications that will assist the behavior of network applications along with advanced capabilities for American Airlines to provide for its users.
